“I think of our bodies as EVERYTHING: our bodies are culture, history, present, and future, all at once. Out of respect for and trust in our bodies and collective memories, I give equal weight to story and image, to movement and stillness, to what I imagine and to what I do not know” (Johnson, 112).

if i were la llorona for a day, i'd let my tired overcome me ~ and send me. I would release my navel and let it fall out unclench my jaw and surrender my cheeks ~ and i would cry. i would cry when i woke up late and missed my morning walk i would cry when i saw someone eating alone i would cry everytime i saw my mother. and my sisters. i would cry when i zoomed out to see how all of my creations set off chain reactions of truth telling i would cry when i saw bravery. i would cry when i walked down a sidewalk and saw a squirrel driven in half. i would cry when i was certain. i would cry all the time. forever. and then, id be free.

This is a work about expelling that which does not serve you. Be it: people, lovers, ideologies.. There could be vomit. There could also be tears. There will be release. There has to be.

This is a work about inviting the spirit into the body. Embracing the spirit with the body. And, praying the spirit remember the body.

Para Femina Performed at Danspace Project, Arts on Site, Triskelion Arts Center "Para Femina" is a series of mental, physical, and emotional training modules calling vis-á-vis to prepare for a future promised for females. A study on all the things we can and cannot do as women, the duet interrogates our fears, our mistakes, and our desire for gold. Each round turns up the dial on the competitive charge between women in an effort to diffuse and distill the duties of sisterhood. vis-á-vis is the collaboration between dance theater artists Kaitlyn Bishop and Erica Saucedo. Erica and Kate generate highly physical and strange content through guided meditation, improvisation, and trust. Photo by Kyle Netzeband, Arts on Site
Performed at Austin Dance Festival, The Actor’s Fund Center At the altar of sleeplessness and solitude, who better to lift us from our knees than a secret version of ourselves? How do we beckon her and how does she respond when she is no longer alone? This work follows the storyline of two entities as they conjure resiliency and endurance, in solidarity and solitude, wrinkling the lines of time to tell their stories of lost love. The pair test a technique for personal growth through the creation of superalteregos. As they cultivate these characters, they also strive to find room for one another in moments of hardship and humor. Questioning the rituals of healing, the two protagonists engage one another in a dance of mixed tapes, bed sheets, Patsy Cline and watermelon fields. Inspired by the works of Frida Kahlo, surrealism, pop culture and poetry, Altær will share the tale through an evening of movement and media.

in spirit-flesh, the H.Exotic reexamines the undercurrents of Euro-American imperialism and colonization by interrogating the burden of the brown female body as a historic site for national and sexual conquest as proposed by Priscilla Pena-Ovalle.
